Jobs Description
The Bangladesh Police is a law enforcement agency in the People's Republic of Bangladesh that operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Its main responsibilities include maintaining peace, enforcing laws, and protecting the safety and property of citizens. The police also play a significant role in the criminal justice system. The Bangladesh Police played a crucial role during the country's liberation war.
During the medieval period, the Muhtasib was in charge of police duties, while Kotwals were responsible for policing in urban areas. The policing system established by Sher Shah Suri was further organized during the reign of Emperor Akbar, with the introduction of Fouzdari, Mir Adal, Kazi, and Kotwal positions. Kotwals were the chief police officials of larger cities, and many district sadar police stations are still known as Kotwali police stations. The Mughal period also saw the establishment of a disciplined police system, though it did not have a professional police force like that of the British period.
In 1829, the British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel, introduced a bill that established an organized police force in London. This model was later adopted by New York City and other countries. In 1858, the British government took control of the Indian Territory and established a police system in each province, modeled after the British constabularies. The police in each province were placed under the control of an Inspector-General of Police, while the Superintendent of Police oversaw policing in each district. This Act, known as the Police Act of 1861, is still in effect in Bangladesh and other countries in the region.
After the partition of the sub-continent in 1947, the police force in Bangladesh was first named the East Bengal Police and then the East Pakistan Police, but it continued to function as it had during British rule. During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, Bengali-speaking police officers joined with citizens to fight against Pakistani forces, with many ranks suffering deaths. The resistance of Bengali police at the Rajarbagh police headquarters is considered the first major battle of the war. After the war, the Bangladesh Police were reorganized and modernized, with a focus on improving professionalism and efficiency
